No form of divorce is good and nobody who gets into marriage with the intentions of staying for life, wants a divorce . But sometimes it is a necessary act of martial separation due to varied reasons. Religion and society have their separate views on how divorce should be handled if two couples are no longer compatible in their marriage.
While Societal view on divorce is much more straight forward, most religions absolutely frown at any couple who decide to take this path as a means of ending their marriage vows. Marriages are no longer designed to last. Even if rules are placed forcefully and permanently for couples to be together once they make they marriage vows, it would be a disaster rather than a solution.
It's about time we understand what the views of major religions of the world are about divorce, and if religious institutions have help marriages strive stronger with their challenges or if they might have directly or indirectly contributed to the epidemic state at which divorce have been adopted worldwide as a form of marriage dissolution.
• The Islamic View On Marriage
Islam goes into detailed rules about divorce in the Koran, which emphasizes on the reasons why couples should divorce if they find that they are no longer compatible while married. Infact about a hundred pages in the Koran is dedicated to matters pertaining to divorce only. Islam is not relaxed about divorce and lots of complex rules and regulations about marriages and divorce have been created probably to discourage couples from wanting to end their relationships with the magnitude of due processes involved.
Divorce rules also depends on the islamic sect and according to the Koran, Prophet Muhammad called divorce "the most displeasing thing to Allah". So it is highly discouraged by Islam.
Islamic law have separated divorce into 3 types
•The Khula
When it is the woman who pushed for divorce to take place in her marriage
•Lian
When the husband accuses the wife of being adulterous but there are no witness to prove that Infact she committed the act
• Talaq
When the husband is the one who demanded for a divorce proceeding
The Talaq is the most popular of all three kinds of divorce, but the way it is practiced varies between various sects like the Shia and Sunni islamic sects.
A woman's property is not shared between the divorcing couples when a divorce has taken place according to islamic laws.
Whatever she made or had earned during the course of her marriage solely belongs to her but this is not the case for the man who would have to share his property between himself and the wife he intends to divorce.
The Christian View On Divorce
According to Christian laws, God totally frowns on divorce as a means of loosing the marriage knot. In the old testament when Moses created rules for divorce if a man was no longer content with his wife , was because despite discouraging divorce among married isrealite couples, some marriages were still bent on dissolution with or without laws.
This as seen in Matthew 19:8 as spoken by Jesus he said;
"Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."So a coordinated and orderly means had to be created to see that separation between couples are peaceful and properly handled.
In general, the Christian religion frowns on divorce sternly.
- God totally discourages it,
- Marriage is a sacred union
- Marriage is a forever binding union
With the introduction of the New Testament , following the views of Jesus Christ. There are only two reasons for divorce in the christian faith which are;
- if a partner is unfaithful
- if one partner abandons the other
As the world continually evolves, so as religion. Lots of christian faithfuls even the conservative branded Christians are beginning to accept divorce and seeing absolutely wrong with it.
According to statistical research; conservative Christians who are regular church goers are 20% more likely to seek divorce when they have marriage challenges as opposed to non church goers.
